Request Summary: Transfusion free surgeries
Request Category: Private Individuals
Question Number 1: I'd be grateful if you could provide me with details of which hospital(s) within your trust area: Have medical staff/surgical team trained to carry out bloodless surgery.
Answer To Question 1: We can confirm that Â鶹¹ú²ú NHS Foundation Trust is the only hospital in our Trust and we have staff trained to carry out bloodless surgery. We cannot comment on other Trusts.
Question Number 2: Have autologous blood transfusion and patient's own cell salvage equipment available.
Answer To Question 2: Pre-operative autologous donation (PAD) is not recommended for the majority of patients but can be arranged via the local NHSBT if deemed appropriate. There are many criteria that need to be fulfilled before this is considered. I am unaware of any patients who own their own cell salvage equipment therefore unable to answer. I can confirm that the Trust has cell salvage equipment that is used in theatres as and when appropriate.
Question Number 3: Keep stocks of synthetic blood transfusion substitutes.
Answer To Question 3: Generally speaking, the synthetic blood substitutes and blood products that have been developed are divided into perflurocarbon-based products (PFC), hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers, synthetic platelets, recombinant factors, and blood expanders. Many of these have not been approved for routine use within the NHS. I can confirm that the Trust holds stocks of recombinant coagulation factors
